Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to reduce the volume of AI-created media appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the platform announced that it now features over 1 bn content made with AI.
Testing and Rollout
This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a global release. This advancement comes amid a surge in content created by AI, fueled by emerging video-generation tools.
The Broader AI Trend
It has been noted that almost a tenth of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site only show content made by AI. A large amount of this output is considered “AI slop”, a label for substandard, bulk-generated content that is typically illogical or surreal.
“We know from our community that many people like content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to provide users the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” commented a company executive.
Scale of AI Content
The platform announced that there are now over a billion videos on its network tagged as made with AI. Collectively, in excess of 100 m media items are uploaded to the app daily, making AI content a limited part of its complete catalog.
User Control Features
Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI content they watch by accessing the content preference setting in the app and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the tool include current affairs, fashion, cosmetics, and dance.
AI Disclosure Rules
Its guidelines oblige creators to label convincing AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.
Furthermore, the service will from now on attach an artificially created tag to content made using its built-in AI features, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This action is aimed to stop users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is also introducing a $2m awareness program for specialists and organizations to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will assist non-profit groups specializing in training coding and technology.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, amid discussion over intentions to lay off hundreds of content moderators in the UK. TikTok is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its user protection division in London, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.
A senior executive clarified that people-led review would still have a role, but automated tools can protect employees by eliminating the most distressing content prior to it is viewed by humans. The company stated a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the past year due to intervention by its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we additionally believe it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
