A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
