The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
